AC Special Projects light up Arts Club
A.C. Special Projects (ACSP) collaborated with lighting designer Patrick Woodroffe to source and install a bespoke lighting system for the 100 capacity Club Nouveau in the basement of the relaunched Arts Club on Dover Street.
The members club, founded in 1863, was reopened in October by property entrepreneur Gary Landesburg and restaurateur Arjun Waney to provide an exclusive meeting place for actors, writers, musicians and other creatives.
Having previously collaborated with ACSP on lighting projects at Somerset House and the V&A, Woodroffe approached the company for fixtures to complement the elegant 1940’s feel of the basement’s interior and a flexible control system.
An upstage lighting bar is fixed into the ceiling void and rigged with eight Robe LEDForce 7 RGBW fixtures fitted with barn doors for a retro aesthetic and to contain the light within the compact stage. Another two LEDForce 7s a side, are attached to side-stage columns and used for cross stage fill.
Thirty Anolis ArcSource 6s are fitted around the edge of a recessed ovular ceiling feature above the main seated floor area, a Spotlight Mini Profile Zoom with Iris, is focused onto the front of the stage from the back of the venue, and slits were cut into the ceiling either side of the stage to accommodate three ETC Source Four Junior profiles per side providing a row of warm white focusable beams. There’s also a Pulsar Demon strobe and a Jem K1 hazer.
A Mode Colour Style controller, pre-programmed with a series of generic stage lighting states can be accessed by the duty manager, and an ETC SmartFade ML for more complex and hands-on control. Both work via a Chroma-Q Magic Box DMX A-B Switch.
“It was an incredible project, with every aspect of design, presentation and appearance very carefully considered,” ACSP project manager Lance Bromhead said. “It was fantastic for us to work with Patrick again on another high-profile project.”
